What You Should Know About High Visibility Safety Products

By Minnie Whitley

Safety is important for everyone. It is even included in the hierarchy of the needs of man. It is the condition where one is protected from physical, psychological, occupational and other events that are considered by one to be undesirable. While there is no such thing as total safety against anything all at once, one can still control hazards to reach an acceptable level of risk. It is as they say, no pain means no gain.

But, there is no such thing as being protected from everything. If avoid risks so that nothing bad will ever happen to you, then you are not giving yourself a chance to grow. Risking is a part of life. You do not have to take herculean risks, you only have to reach an acceptable level. At work, you can protect yourself from possible harm through using high visibility safety products.

These are usually pants, vests, bibs, jumpsuits, and even head gear that provide additional protection to the one wearing it. These are made of sturdy and low maintenance materials. One standout characteristic of these apparel is that they allow the wearer to be visible at all times, especially in dimly lit areas where it is hard for one to see clearly. They also have shiny silver strips that reflect light.

Not all members of the working class get to wear protective clothing. Working force who are required to wear such comprise those who work as traffic enforcers, roadside construction laborers, rescue and emergency units, and parking lot attendants. These people wear such clothing because they get to work in areas not reached by good lighting. Their brightly colored garb allow for them to be seen easily even in dimly lit conditions.

These apparel are made using two types of materials. One is the fluorescent material. This takes UV rays from the sun and sends it back to anyone who looks at it as more visible light. However, as they need UV rays from the sun, products made from these materials can only be used in broad daylight. This has lead to the dilemma faced by night time workers who need the same protective gear.

To solve the problem, gears made from retro reflective materials are used for night shift laborers. This returns light in the direction of the source. For example, people working on road constructions after sunset are seen by drivers because the light from the headlights of the car will hit the retro reflective suit and will bounce back to the source of light. These are most suited for low light conditions.

There are also very special protective wear that functions best even when it is daytime or nighttime. These are called combined performance retro reflective material. They give good visibility in all lighting conditions.

In choosing high visibility products, one should look out for the size and the fit of the clothing. For optimal performance, safety apparel must be well fitted to the person who has to use it. One should also consider the clothing that is usually worn underneath the safety apparel. Keep in mind that large and bright garments provide more visibility than the small ones. Choose also a color that is easily seen in the type of work environment it shall be used in.

All safety apparel are divided into three different strata. Class one is noted for low coverage. Class two guarantees medium coverage and fine visibility. Class three is extremely visible under all possible conditions and provides for total coverage.
