3 Tips For Artistry With Pastels

By Robert Sutter

It's clear that there are a number of ways to create art but I am of the opinion that pastel artistry is one of the softest. The images that are created are, ultimately, some of the most relaxing and this fact is accentuated by the litany of lighter colors and hues implemented as well. It is clear that this process can be followed through with but what are some of the most important methods to consider, you may wonder? For the sake of attaining help, keep these 3 points in mind.

1. If you want to make the most out of your pastels, you have to hold them in a particular way. It is recommended that you hold them not unlike pencils, as this will allow you a greater sense of range in the long term. Let's say that you want to create thinner lines while going about pastel artistry; a lighter grip, as well as application, will be required. Make sure that you use your entire arm so that you have as much range on the matter as possible.

2. Understand which pastels are best when they are mixed together. This is where I feel as though painting is an easier endeavor, since you will be able to mix colors rather easily before applying them to the canvas in front of you. Pastels, on the other hand, have to be applied directly on the surface but I am of the opinion that this has the potential to create a litany of moods as a result. For more comprehensive blending, on your part, make sure that you have a tissue or cotton swab on hand.

3. One of the biggest variables to consider, as far as your pastels are concerned, is the surface that they might be applied to. This is especially important when given the fact that pastels usually do not work well with smoother surfaces, which means that you have to look for rougher textures. These, on the other hand, prove especially effective as far as pastel artistry is concerned. While a seemingly small difference, at first place, it can tremendously alter the landscape of what it is that you are trying to create.

I can only hope that these tips will be able to help you understand how to go about pastel artistry as effectively as possible. It's clear that this particular endeavor is a fulfilling one for many artists but I am sure that artists will be able to make the most of it if they have certain tips put into place. Every single element matters, in this regard, whether it's the surface used as a canvas, the way that pastels are used for drawing, or what have you. These tips, in the long run, should prove useful.
