Tips For Suppling Drinks For A Party?

By Chris Carr

The reason MixYour Drink.com came into being, was to give people an avenue to find some fantastic cocktail recipes, advice and tips on their favourite beers and spirits. We set out to give people an online portal to help them when it came to the what, when why and how of drinks. A question we were asked recently by some friends thinking of having a party, was should they supply drinks for a party or ask their guests to bring their own? We decided to take a look at that question:

Our immediate question back to the friends, was well what type of party were they planning to hold, was it an engagement, weddings, birthday, or simply just several friends getting together for a few drinks?

The question of whether you should supply drinks for a party is really dependant on the particular party occasion. There are certain social occasions where drinks are supplied.

Engagement parties and wedding reception are two that come to mind. Usually these events take place in a licensed venue. Most time beer and wine as well as soft drink are supplied, with a limit set at the bar, which controls the costs of the function. There will be a few guests who choose to drink spirits and if that isn't supplied then they may wish to purchase it themselves.

Engagements and Weddings: Generally drinks are supplied at these functions. Beer and wine is the accepted beverage that is supplied. On occasions some spirits may be supplied, however often it is suggested that spirit drinkers buy their own at the bar.

Gathering of Friends: This is where you have options to suit the occasions and the friendships. Most people hosting an intimate dinner party supply the drinks to suit the menu. However it's a rare event that an intimate friend doesn't arrive armed with a bottle of wine or two. Some guests may prefer to bring their favourite beverage for their own consumption.

Sometimes a gathering of a few good friends at an intimate dinner party is an enjoyable way to spend an evening. Usually at these events the host supplies the drinks to compliment the menu. Sometimes the guests are asked to bring a bottle of wine, or a guest may just present a bottle of wine to the host as a curtsey gesture.

Perhaps hosting a cocktail party may be an idea that appeals to you. If you have close friends of like minded activities to yourself, they may be interested in bringing a different bottle of spirits so that each guest has the opportunity to produce an exciting cocktail. Drinking responsibly is most important for everybody. If you are the host then you have a certain responsibility to ensure your guests are safe and aren't in any danger of overindulging. While they are responsible for their own actions, you as a host have a duty of care to them.

Offering a coffee as the evening draws to a close may be an excellent way to finish the evening on a happy note. There is nothing more enjoyable than relaxing with a few drinks and some good friends.
