The next step is the preparation of the slate so that it is re-felted. All the cracks and holes are filled using pool table waxes. The wax will need to be left to harden for a minute or so. Any excesses are scrapped with a putty knife. It will then be important to clean the slate surface using a gentle cleanser. The surface has to dry completely before it is covered.
The felt pieces that are being used will need to be measured. This will ensure that they are cut in accordance to the dimensions of the table. Edges of the felt are aligned flush with the table edges. As a matter of fact, the measurements should be very accurately done so that it fits well to the table.
The next process is normally very important. One will need to start stapling the fabric to the table. The process is started at the center of one short edge before proceeding to the corners. All this is done while remembering not to cover the pockets. When placing the staples, one needs to move in increments of about two inches while pulling the fabric taut. This is done for all the sides of the table.
There is trimming of excess fabric from the pockets. On an approximate basis, three inches of the fabric are left at the inner edges. What follows is pushing of the fabric to the pockets such that all pocket sides are lined.
The felt is used to line the rails. In order to know the size of the felt pieces to be used, the rail design should be observed. The rails are then reattached to the table. Replacement of the pockets and liners is the last process.
