How A Live Event Production Company Operates

By Sarah Reed

In the early days of film and music, most often a single individual was in charge of promoting and producing the event. Whereas, now there are a number of different ways to do so. While a single individual can often promote and produce smaller productions, large scale productions often use a live event production company.

In most cases, these companies work with large scale productions such as large concerts, theatrical shows, live bands, opera and modern dance. For, there are a lot of different areas which must be set up and taken down at each event. These include, staging, special effects, transport, lighting, packaging, sound, communications and at times, make-up and costuming.

Live music and theater have a long history of sound and visual presentations. While video is more recent than sound, both are often required in live productions. Both technologies began with the first talking film, though sound has been around much longer than video presentations shown during concerts and laser light shows.

In fact, sound reinforcement has been around since 1927 when sound was added to the Jazz Singer, the first talking film. Later, the first public address system which could be amplified in outdoor settings as developed, becoming the first large scale sound system in the 1930s.

Then, in the 1960s, Bill Graham assisted the historic Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco when there was a need for sound systems which could be interchanged quickly and easily. In fact, Graham also founded FM Productions in the early 1970s to provide light and touring systems to bands such as the Grateful Dead and others whom toured on a regular basis.

The production company and a number of San Francisco based musicians became embroiled in a heated debate over the best type of sound system available. For some, it was an array or split array of speakers while others believed horn loaded speakers provided more clarity and better highs and lows in the music. As a resolution, the Grateful Dead and others began providing the sound equipment for each performance.

Live production companies in business today have a lot more going for them than individual promoters of the past. For, most have specific policies and procedures which individuals setting up and taking down events must follow on a regular basis. In addition, the concept of artists providing sound equipment as well as musical instruments and other elements is now a standard practice when it comes to artists and bands of all sizes.

The history behind how Bill Graham came to the United States is an interesting one. For, Bill first escaped the Nazi invasion at age 10. After which, the young Bill Graham relocated to New York and was placed in foster care.

After having graduated from high school, then college with a degree in business, a young Bill Graham relocated to San Francisco in the 1960s. Graham's first job as promoter was for a group of comics known as the San Francisco Mime Troupe. Later, Bill became involved in promoting live bands and large concerts.
