How To Become A Voice Talent Artist

By Harold Parker

While most often, individuals interested in film and television want to become actors, directors and writers, others desire to become vocal artists. For these individuals, there is more than one way to become involved with projects that require voice talent. For example, an individual can acquire a vocal acting coach, attend classroom or online training.

In some cases, individuals can complete paid or free webinars and workshops which include training in the industry. Whether learning from a vocal coach, or attending professional classroom or online training, there is often a great deal of upfront costs involved. For, most often the individual will need to pay for a production studio, training and marketing materials.

Once having obtained a coach, it is important to listen to any advice provided. In addition to professional coaching, there are also webinars and workshops which can be quite helpful to those staring out in the field. As such, it is also important to know what specific area one is most interested in providing voice over work.

When it comes to vocal acting, an artist can focus on a specific art form or multiple ones. As such, when looking at various training programs, it is often good to know which one is best suited towards a specific goal. While there are specialized and generalized areas of training in the field, most often artists pick at least one primary area of focus, even if working on other projects and styles from time to time.

While it can be quite gratifying to make money in this area, one must understand the costs in becoming involved. For example, training, professional recording equipment and marketing do not come cheap. In addition, it is a field in which last minute revisions and emergencies can often require the individual to be on-call twenty four seven. In most cases, projects will require at least one or more revisions, regardless of the quality of the work.

Individuals working in this area can not take revisions as a personal reflection on the quality of work submitted. As such, it is imperative that individuals working in this field understand that directors, project managers and writers can often change a script at the last minute. A process which can require several revisions unrelated to the quality or style of work previously submitted.

Generally, a project will only require one or two rounds of revisions before being finalized. As such, once the project is complete, the artist is then notified. In some cases, artists work on a number of different projects for different people. Whereas, others work on multiple projects for the same person or studio. Whatever the case, it is essential that the artist always review all audio material before each submission, especially if doing so after revisions.

Most often, those working in this area enjoy the work and are often successful. Although, there are also individuals who are just not cut out to be vocal artists. While this is the case, it is often possible to direct these individuals into other areas in which any proven talents may be better suited. For example, one may not have the voice necessary to be an audio artist, though could very well be good at directing, reviewing or writing commercials or other content.
