Learning How To Draw Cartoon Characters Takes Practice And Patience

By Krystal Branch

Though a lot of people would love to know how to draw cartoon characters, they think it is too difficult so don't even bother trying. These are the same people who when they were in their art classes at school just could not manage the subject. They would see their friends being able to draw cartoons, and were extremely jealous of them, because they could not do the same.

Learning the fundamentals of drawing cartoons does not take very long, and it doesn't depend on having any previous artistic experience. It is all down to your willingness to learn, and being patient. It is not a skill that you have to be born with, or that runs in the family, anybody should be able to draw very simple characters in a few hours. The more time and effort you put into it, the better you will become.

Take a close look at some of the cartoon characters you see on your television, you will see that they are quite simple. They are just a set of geometrical shapes with some strong features added. This shows that the drawings do not have to be very complicated, and that in fact less is actually more.

If you are a beginner, you have got to learn the skill step-by-step. There are a number of different strategies you can adopt to help you make drawing the characters easier. For example, when drawing the face of your character, you have got to decide whether they have a rounded face, a long face, or a square face. By using geometrical shapes, such as a circle, an oval or a square you could easily get the basics for this face drawn.

With this in mind, go and look at some well-known cartoons and you will see that the illustrator did base their faces on these geometrical shapes. Follow the same steps when drawing the eyes, ears and mouth. When you have finished drawing the head, go and do the same with the body. In no time at all you will have a sketch of a very basic cartoon character.

It is important that you keep everything as simple as you can. Do not try to add too much detail as this is just an initial sketch. If you try to make it too complicated you are going to find it very difficult, and frustration will overcome the project.

It is only when you have completed the basic sketch, should you start adding any details. If you are unsure about what to add, go and have another look at cartoons drawn by famous artists, and see how they have used simple shapes to highlight individual characteristics. Do not worry about copying other cartoons, as this is just a way to begin developing your own style of drawing.

If you follow a simple step-by-step procedure you will soon learn how to draw cartoon characters. As you become more confident, the time it takes for you to draw great characters will speed up, so do not worry about how long the first ones take. It is so important that you concentrate on developing a strategy, and a style, and then you will start to get the results that you want.
